FUSION HELPS FORD SET NEW RECORD FOR HYBRID SALES, BUCKING INDUSTRYWIDE DIP IN HEV DEMAND

  • Ford Motor Company has already set a record for annual hybrid sales of 31,000 hybrids through November, eclipsing the previous high in 2007. Ford hybrid sales are up 67 percent this year while overall industry hybrid sales were down 11 percent through November

  • Ford’s hybrid sales were strengthened by the debut of the new Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid, the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedans on the road at 41 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway

  • Fusion Hybrid has received numerous third-party endorsements including Motor Trend’s Car of the Year Award and Car and Driver “10 Best” cars for 2010

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 23, 2009 – What do a global engineering and consulting company, a Michigan technical university, and a 91-year-old Texas man have in common?

Answer: All three are “greening” U.S. roadways with Ford hybrid vehicles – and helping Ford set a new record for hybrid sales in a year in which overall industry demand for the gas-electric vehicles was down.

Ninety-one-year-old Bill Casselberry, of San Angelo, Texas, is living proof that it’s never too late to go green. In September, he traded in his 2006 Toyota Camry for a 2010 Fusion Hybrid.

“The main reason I wanted to buy the Fusion Hybrid is that I’m concerned about all the greenhouse gases we’re putting into the air, and I wanted to do my part to reduce the negative effect on our atmosphere,” he said. “If we don’t do something now, future generations are not going to have a world to live in.”

Casselberry says he’s thrilled with his new car.

“I love it,” he exclaimed. “The only problem is that I’m 91 years old, and I don’t get to drive it as much as I’d like to.”

Strong sales of the Fusion Hybrid show that many customers share Casselberry’s enthusiasm for Ford’s newest addition to its hybrid lineup. Introduced in March of this year, the new Fusion Hybrid represents 45 percent of all Ford hybrid sales for 2009.

In addition to the Fusion, Ford’s longest-running hybrid nameplate – the Escape Hybrid – continues to attract customers to the Ford brand.

Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, operates a North American fleet of approximately 300 vehicles, which includes 22 Escape Hybrids.

“Our company is always looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Rod Cramer, fleet manager, Black & Veatch. “The Escape Hybrids also play a major role in showing our employees and clients how serious our commitment is to the environment that we all share.”

According to Cramer, the Escape hybrids enable the company to save money through greater efficiency. The vehicles also have had a positive impact on employees.

“The excitement we caused throughout the company when we started to place them out in the field was electric,” he said. “Our professionals really like the versatility the vehicle provides with features like a comfortable seating compartment, user-friendly equipment and the ability to handle off-road requirements.”

Michigan Technological University (MTU) recently replaced four gas-powered SUVs in its 70-vehicle fleet with new Ford Escape Hybrids.

“Our goal is to go green one vehicle at a time,” said Pete Pelissero, manager of MTU Fleet Services, adding that MTU plans to replace five more gas SUVs with Escape Hybrids in the next 12 months and swap all of the university’s sedans, SUVs and minivans for hybrids within the next five years.

“The issue to go with the Escape hybrids was to make our point of talking the talk and walking the walk,” he said. “We want to lead by example, and show the rest of the country that we are serious about going green. It won’t happen overnight, but we will get there.”

Ford hybrids on track for record sales for 2009

Despite a 11 percent decline in hybrid sales across the industry, Ford’s year-to-date hybrid sales are up 67 percent over the same period last year. And the company is on track to set a new hybrid sales record for 2009.

“Hybrid customers increasingly are considering Ford,” said George Pipas, Ford sales analyst. “And we are seeing a growing number of conquest sales, many of them from customers coming from import brands, mostly Toyota and Honda.”

According to Pipas, the fuel economy message associated with hybrid vehicles resonates well with import customers.

“That, to me, is the significance of offering such high quality, fuel-efficient vehicles,” he said.

“The hybrid technology is introducing us to a whole new community of customers who might have otherwise never visited a Ford showroom.”

The newest additions to the Ford hybrid stable – the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids – are strengthening sales. Both vehicles deliver an EPA estimated 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, topping the Toyota Camry by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway and making them the most fuel-efficient midsize sedans on the road.

And the Fusion Hybrid has received a number of important third-party endorsements. The entire Fusion lineup – including the hybrid model – won this year’s prestigious Motor Trend Car of the Year® award. The Fusion Hybrid also was honored as one of Car and Driver magazine’s “10 Best” cars for 2010.

THREE BLINKS AND IT'S OFF; NEW FORD LANE CHANGE TECHNOLOGY HELPS EASE DRIVER PET PEEVES•Ford’s new three-blink lane change technology gives drivers a way to avoid an annoyance on the road with a simple flick of the indicator that turns off automatically
•A recent driving survey puts people who leave their turn signals on for miles in the “Top 10 Driving Pet Peeves” list
•The new feature appears on the 2011 Ford Fiesta, which goes on sale in summer 2010 with a projected best-in-class fuel economy of 40 mpg highway and an expressive and vibrant design
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 23, 2009 – Does the sight of a blinker flashing on the car in front of you for miles and miles drive you crazy? You’re not the only one.

This annoying habit is so frustrating to drivers that it made the “Top 10 Driving Pet Peeves” list by a leading vehicle insurance company, which surveyed thousands of drivers nationwide. Nicknamed Morse Coders in the survey, these drivers often cruise for miles without realizing their blinker is on. Meanwhile, they are annoying everyone behind them.

With tongue in cheek, Hagerty Insurance Agency, which conducted the survey, suggested that Morse Coders are leaving their blinkers on for a reason: “Now let’s be fair. Perhaps these Morse Coders are part of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project, their turn signals beaming out across the galaxies in search of other life forms – or not.”

On a more serious note, national research by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., found that consumers are confused by turn signals that are left on.

“Most drivers have found themselves behind cars that have their signals on after changing lanes,” said Jim Thomas, senior vice president of RDA Group. “This can be confusing because there is no way of knowing if the signal is a real indication of an upcoming turn or not. To reduce this confusion, drivers want vehicles to automatically disengage the turn signal after making a lane change.”

New Ford technology, coming this summer on the 2011 Ford Fiesta, does exactly that.

Ford’s three-blink lane change technology is simplifying the way drivers maneuver on the road. With a simple flick of the switch – either up or down, depending on which lane the driver is moving into – the turn indicator will blink three times and automatically shut off. The switch can be held in the lane change position longer for additional blinks beyond the three minimum.

To engage the turn signal, drivers move the switch into the standard position, one more press past the lane change mode.

“This allows the driver to let go of the switch and concentrate on driving,” explains John Murphy, Core Switch Product Engineer. “Instead of holding down the switch, they can give a quick tap, show a three-blink warning that they are about to merge and change lanes. It’s that simple.”

For motorists who drive behind the Morse Coders, this is welcome news: “Driving behind a car that’s blink, blink, blinking is enough of a driver annoyance that we’re putting the technology in our full Ford line going forward,” said Murphy. “Customers say this is confusing – and it bugs them. So we’re doing something about it.”

Going on sale in the summer of 2010, the all-new Ford Fiesta is among the first vehicles in the Ford lineup to receive the new three-blink technology. The “annoyance avoidance” feature is yet another technology going into the expressive, fun-to-drive Fiesta that makes perfect sense.

With a projected best-in-class highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, Fiesta is designed to be versatile, personal and adaptable. In fact, Fiesta is expected to deliver best-in-class safety, convenience and connectivity with segment-exclusive SYNC® voice-activated communications system, an expressive color palette and available graphics.

The 2011 Ford Super Duty is also set to receive the three-blink turn signal technology when it goes on sale in 2010.

Opel Adaptive All-Wheel Drive with Early Warning System

Opel Adaptive All-Wheel Drive with Early Warning System

    • Intelligent controls defuse critical situations at their onset

    • Sets new standard for reaction time of torque distribution

    • Insignia’s Adaptive 4x4 conquers customers in new Opel segment

Rüsselsheim. The Opel Insignia is breathing new life into the mid-size segment with its breathtaking design and leading technology. The Car of the Year 2009 features innovations such as Opel’s new Adaptive 4x4 system which have previously only been available in much more expensive sports cars or luxury sedans. Together with the FlexRide premium chassis and the electronic-hydraulic multi-disk clutch, the Adaptive 4x4 system sets new standards for reaction time of the controls in the Insignia. When the sensors detect a critical situation, it only takes around 80 milliseconds – or the blink of an eye – for the system to send the required power distribution to the wheels. The power can be distributed seamlessly from zero to 100 percent between the front and rear axle or between the rear wheels. In contrast to conventional mechanical all-wheel drives, the hydraulic controls enable lightning-quick intervention.

Already about five percent of the 177,000 Insignia’s ordered in Europe are equipped with all-wheel drive. The new Adaptive 4x4 system is available with the 2-liter gasoline turbo and is standard in the 2.8 V6 Turbo and OPC models. In Germany, prices begin at 35,685 euros for the 162 kW/220 hp Opel Insignia 2.0 turbo Edition.

All-wheel drive electronics designed as early-warning system

The adaptive all-wheel drive system receives information from three modules: BCM (Body Control Module), ECU (Engine Control Unit) and the ESP module. This information is sent to the control module, analyzed and then torque is distributed individually to the wheels. The Insignia 4x4’s power distribution travels from the front axle differential over the cardan shaft to a hydraulic Haldex multi-disk clutch, which electronically distributes the torque from zero to 100 percent between the front and rear axle. At rear axle, power distribution is also controlled by a hydraulic multi-disk clutch, where nearly 100 percent to power can be transferred to one of the rear wheels if required. This gives drivers the confidence that their Insignia 4x4 can still maintain safe traction even if three wheels are on ice and only one of the rear wheels can find grip.

The modules receive their signals from sensors that capture yaw rate, acceleration, steering angle, wheel speed, gas pedal position, engine speed and torque, and adapt power distribution to the driving situation based on this information. Even before take-off, the control module receives information on gas pedal position and engine speed and is able to transfer torque between the front and rear axle to prevent the car losing traction. This means before a racing start, a proportionate amount of propulsion power is already sent to the rear wheels. Andreas Holl, head of Insignia chassis development, says, “A big advantage of the new Opel all-wheel drive system is that a critical situation such as spinning front wheels doesn’t have to occur before the proper corrective measures are introduced.”

Bad roads, rain and snow call for stability and control

Particularly in hazardous weather conditions like heavy rain, snow and sleet, poor quality roads with potholes put extreme demands on chassis technology. Advanced chassis systems are designed to recognize and avoid dangers as early as possible, as well as support the driver in critical driving situations. As a consequence, driving the Opel Insignia 4x4 is delightful, even more so when the wintery driving conditions are appalling.

An example of this is driving in snow. Many drivers have experienced the feeling of picking up a too much downhill speed, taking their foot off the gas pedal and realizing that their vehicle is struggling to follow the steering direction. The Insignia’s adaptive 4x4 system also comes to drivers’ aid in these types of dangerous situations. With its complex sensor system, the all-wheel drive technology can not only distribute torque but also redirect it to individual wheels in the case of braking on the engine (drag torque) as a result of releasing the accelerator thereby increasing the steer ability and their control of the vehicle.

Thanks to the many control options available such as torque and braking torque distribution as well as FlexRide damper control, the adaptive all-wheel drive system handles many critical driving situations without the need for ESP to intervene. ESP stays in the background as a guardian angel.

Automatic fuel-saving mode and sport mode at the push of a button

The Opel Insignia Adaptive 4x4 system is not only useful in critical safety situations – it also detects when there are no external conditions that require special intervention, such as travelling on a highway. In this situation the system switches off the rear-wheel drive system and reverts to front wheel drive to reduce friction losses and save fuel.

The driver can also steer power distribution at the push of a button. By choosing the sport mode, more power is sent to the rear axle to increase traction and achieve a more agile driving performance. This makes it easier for sporty drivers to maintain complete and active control even as the driving safety limits are pushed out a bit further. The Adaptive 4x4 system stabilizes up to the tires’ grip limit, at which point ESP intervenes if necessary.

Used cars at your service

Are you all set to accelerate and gear up yours car to hit the roads? If you think that a brand new car offered by car dealers is in your budget and you can survive this economic burden even after purchasing a first-hand car, then go for it. But, if you are skeptical of the cost, then you can still consider purchasing a car.

How? Many dealers have started offering cars for cheap.

They trade in used cars (very popularly known and second hand cars) so that they can profit the buyers as well as the sellers. This proves that, even in the hard economic situation, it is possible to do quite well and become a fighter. In Ireland, major car dealers got affected due the economic downturn. They have considered this option and have succeeded in making great deals.

They have also made an online presence to make their deal easy and effective. Both the parties contact the dealers either to purchase the cars for sale or to get guidelines on ‘sell my car’. So, now you are just a few clicks away from finding thousands of used cars online in various countries like Ireland. Like shopping for clothes, the purchase of cars follows the same conception that more websites you visit, more knowledge about the product and current market condition will be available.

For better understanding, the car dealers post detailed pictures of cars, giving you a vague idea of how well the car is maintained or looks. If the pictures are satisfactory, then you can plan a visit to the store to personally check out a particular car.

Once you have found a feasible deal, you can even get a car insurance quote for the car you are interested in. Again, the online terrain will be of great help in this case as well – thanks to the possibility of obtaining almost every detail with ease. Buying used cars online is now easier and cheaper than ever before.

Before you plan to book it, do consider the price range. Some car dealers tag a price to make sales, whereas others have a price label to make a customer. Now, it’s up to you to choose; you either want a reliable dealer or a money-maker.

Other than that, it is also essential to mark that the deal not only provides you with basic services but also offers some extra value for your benefit like after sales services, car insurance, 24 hour recovery service, full crash repairs, replacement vehicles supplied at special rates - to build a name.

In addition to used cars, these car dealers also offer brand new cars. So, if you think that you can survive this economic burden even after purchasing a first-hand car, then one more option is open for you.

.Buying from a registered Car dealer offers you protection

Buying from a registered Car dealer offers you protection. We believe that the better alternative to buying a secondhand car privately is to buy from a registered dealer. There are many reasons why buying used cars from a registered dealer is safer for consumers. Only Dealers Offer These Services – A Dealer’s Warranty – After Sale Service – Choice of Used cars – Recourse – Guarantee Against Stolen Vehicles – Financial Assistance – Extended Warranties – Accept trade-ins All of these factors make the advantages of buying used cars from registered dealers clear. When one adds up all of these positive reasons and considers the hazards of buying secondhand cars privately, the obvious choice is a used car from a registered car dealer. Reputable car dealers offer the best deals When you buy a used car from a Car dealer, do you really pay more than you would if you bought it privately? Probably not!! There are two important considerations, when
buying a used car or anything else. Quality and Price! Consider The Quality Buying privately is simply buying “as is”. When you purchase privately, you’re buying a car exactly as you see it .. any problems the car has become your problems. When someone’s about to sell their used car, it’s usually because they’re buying another one. That raises the question …. why? Does it need extensive repairs? Has it been giving the owner frequent problems? If so, there’s little likelihood that they’d spend the money to have it fixed … and then sell it. That doesn’t mean that you can’t get a good deal when you buy privately. There’s certainly a chance that the car has been well maintained. Why consider Car dealers then? What does a dealer offer you, if he purchases that same used car from the customer and then sells it to you? First of all, he’s going to have the used car thoroughly inspected and refurbish it both mechanically and, in the case of stains, rust, etc., appearance wise as well. It may need a complete respray, if it’s an older vehicle, or it might just need a quality touch-up. Most importantly, when car dealers sell you the second hand car it’s his responsibility to ensure that it’s reasonably fit for your use. With a dealer, you have recourse. With a private purchase you have little or none. What About Price? It’s true that car dealers expect to make a profit on their sale ….. if not, they’d soon go out of business, wouldn’t they? But what about the private sale. How does the private seller determine the price they want for their car? More often than not, they check to see what car dealers are charging for a comparable
used cars and try to get as close to that price as possible. Often times they might even ask for more because, they may claim, they looked after the car with Tender Loving Care. The TLC may be true or it may not! Only a good mechanical inspection will determine that. Regardless, they’re going to try to get as close to what a car dealer would ask for the secondhand car as they possibly can. That’s just human nature. Everyone wants to try to get the best advantage they can. The private seller isn’t selling the secondhand car to become your best friend. In fact, you’ll probably never hear from the person again. That’s not true of Car dealers thow. He not only wants you as a happy purchaser of that car … he also wants you to spread the word to your friends and relatives that he’s a Car dealer that you’re pleased with Nothing beats a referral from a satisfied customer! So, back to the question. Is it cheaper buying privately? In the final analysis, it might even be more expensive. A dealer’s cost to repair a car, will be well below what the average person will pay. This allows a dealer to refurbish a vehicle, make a profit and still be competitive with a private seller.

DUSTER, THE NEW CAR FROM DACIA

DUSTER, THE NEW CAR FROM DACIA THAT
REWRITES THE 4x4 RULEBOOK
· Following the successive launches of Logan, Sandero and Logan MCV, plus Logan van and Logan
pick-up, Dacia is today poised to take on the 4x4 market with Dacia Duster.
· Dacia Duster is a tough, reliable, easy to use 4x4 aimed at motorists looking for a daily driver with
real off-road ability.
· Dacia Duster is economical both to buy and to run:
- economical to buy: an unbeatable performance/equipment/space package for its price.
- economical to run: available with a choice of thrifty engines featuring low fuel consumption and
low CO2 emissions. The 4x2 diesel versions of Dacia Duster will emit less than 140g of CO2/km,
making them eligible for the Dacia eco² signature, while the 4x4 diesel versions will emit less than
150g of CO2/km.
· Dacia Duster is proof that it is possible to produce an all-terrain vehicle that is not only functional
and affordable, but also respectful of the environment. Dacia, which pioneered a fresh approach
to the way consumers view the automobile following the launch of Logan in 2004, has once again
showcased its ability to think outside of the box with Duster.
· Dacia Duster will be manufactured at the brand's Pitesti plant in Romania. The Pitesti factory will
manufacturer both the 4x2 and 4x4 versions for the European, Turkish and Maghreb markets, with
sales scheduled to begin next spring (2010).
· Duster is a truly international vehicle, both in terms of its markets and production. It will gradually
become available across the world, badged as either a Renault or a Dacia, following the example
of Logan and Sandero.
2
THE GENESIS OF THE DUSTER PROJECT: A RESPONSE TO AN UNMET DEMAND
The Duster project was born out of the simple premise that a real need existed in the world for a comfortable,
strong and affordable 4x4, a category of vehicle which is currently not well served. Aware of this gap, the
Renault group decided to develop an all-terrain vehicle aimed initially at emerging markets. The needs of
European customers were also taken into account from the very start of the project.
- In emerging markets (Russia, Brazil, etc.), the middle classes aspire to owning a modern car that reflects their
social status. At the same time, they want a strong car that is reliable, versatile and capable of standing up to
climatic demands and conditions that can be both tough and varied (long distances, rugged, difficult terrain, use in
built-up areas, often within large conurbations, etc.). The current offer is largely dominated by imported SUVs,
which are often priced beyond the means of these middle classes.
- In Europe, Dacia's success has highlighted the demand for modern, reliable and affordable cars. Although the
current range of 4x4s and SUVs is quite extensive, it neglects the call for a functional, affordable all-terrain
vehicle, favouring instead showy SUVs that are expensive and often ill-suited to the needs of all-terrain motoring.
DACIA DUSTER, EVERYTHING A 4x4 SHOULD BE
Indisputable 4x4 looks…
At first glance, Dacia Duster is clearly a 4x4. Its front end exudes a sense of ruggedness, and the wide wheel
arches, imposing chromed grille and sump guard all point to Dacia Duster 4x4 credentials. Seen from the side, its
high ground clearance, clearly-defined wheel arches and body protection are an open invitation to take on even
the toughest roads and tracks.
Today's all-terrain vehicles are often synonymous with bulk, a preconception which Dacia Duster sweeps aside.
Standing at a length of just 4.31 metres and a width of 1.82 metres, Dacia Duster is very compact, making it as
at home in built-up areas as it is when taken off the beaten track. Although it clearly demonstrates that it
belongs to the world of all-terrain motoring, Dacia Duster boasts attractive, yet unostentatious lines.
…with genuine go-anywhere ability
Dacia Duster was designed to tackle all types of roads and tracks, all over the world. In order to meet these
varied needs, Dacia Duster will be available in all markets in both 4x2 form (for customers looking for high
ground clearance, high driving position but who have no real need for a four-wheel drive daily driver) and
with 4x4 transmission for off-road driving.
Dacia Duster's strengthened underside is suitable for dirt roads and all-terrain use thanks to its high ground
clearance (more than 200mm) and big clearance angles (approach angle: 30 degrees; departure angle: more
than 35 degrees).
3
Dacia Duster is easy to drive and not only aimed at all-terrain aficionados. The combination of its low unladen
weight (1.180kg in 4X2 - 1,280kg in 4X41) and compact proportions ensure particularly agile handling. In the 4X4
version, thanks to the unique and intuitive control (sourced from Nissan) located in the cabin at the foot of the
central column, Dacia Duster drivers can easily adapt the vehicle's transmission configuration to meet
their needs of the moment. This control allows one of three modes to be selected:
- When the AUTO mode is selected, the front/rear torque split is calculated automatically as a function of available
grip. This system is aimed at providing optimal traction, however much grip is available, and gives Dacia Duster
genuine 4x4 ability. In normal conditions, the torque is transmitted through the front wheels only. If traction is lost,
or when grip is at a premium, some of the torque is transferred to the rear axle. In extreme conditions, the torque
is split equally front and rear. This split is performed by an electromagnetic torque converter supplied by Nissan.
- In LOCK mode, the driver electronically locks it into 4x4 mode, whereby 50 per cent of torque is consistently fed
through the rear axle. This mode is recommended in low grip conditions (snow, mud, dirt, sand) at low speeds.
- In 4x2 mode, the transmission is locked into two-wheel drive. This mode is suited to driving on good roads and
reduces fuel consumption.
A DACIA 4x4 WHICH DELIVERS ALL THE STRENGTHS EXPECTED OF THE BRAND
Duster, the sixth vehicle in the Dacia range, remains true to the brand's philosophy by offering unbeatable
cabin space for its price, plus low running costs thanks to its thrifty fuel consumption, as well as a high standard
of security and reliability whatever the conditions.
Unbeatable cabin space for its price
Although Dacia Duster's price is comparable with that of a city car, its exterior and interior dimensions are more
akin to those of a compact car from the next segment up.
Dacia Duster comfortably seats up to five adults. Both front and rear occupants enjoy the same amount of
space as Dacia Logan passengers.
Dacia Duster's boot capacity is unbeatable, too, with a volume of up to 475dm3 ISO (depending on version).
With the rear benchseat folded and tipped forward, Dacia Duster offers impressive carrying ability which can
exceed 1,600dm3 ISO.

Reliable engines with good fuel economy and low CO2 emissions
Both the 4x2 and 4x4 versions of Dacia Duster will be available with either a 1.6 16V 110hp petrol engine or with
85 dCi or 105 dCi diesel power. All three powerplants have already demonstrated their efficiency under the
bonnet of a number of Renault group models.
These engines are perfectly suited to the criteria of cost, strength and ease of maintenance that are a hallmark
of the Dacia range. Combined with Duster's low weight, they ensure that Dacia's newcomer returns low fuel
consumption and boasts impressive ecological credentials, with the dCi diesel versions emitting less than
140g of CO2/km in 4x2 form (qualifying Duster for the Dacia eco² signature) and less than 150g of CO2/km in
the case of the 4x4 versions.
Safety: an absolute priority
Dacia Duster benefits from Renault's acclaimed expertise in the area of safety.
Dacia's 4x4 features Bosch 8.1 ABS, as well as EBV electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake
assist.
On the passive safety front, Dacia Duster comes as standard with two front airbags (depending on market) and
three-point seat belts with load limiters for the front seats. Depending on version, two lateral head/thorax
airbags are fitted in addition to the driver and passenger front airbags to provide additional protection in the case
of an impact from the side. Pyrotechnic pretensioners for the front seats (depending on version) complete Dacia
Duster's retention system. In addition to holding the thorax firmly in place, they limit forward movement of the
body in the case of a frontal impact by tightening the belt around the thorax and the lap.
Reliability and strength: Dacia fundamentals
Like all the vehicles based on the B0/Logan platform, Dacia Duster has been engineered to deliver the hallmark
strength and reliability motorists have come to expect of the brand.
Particular attention has been paid to anti-corrosion protection thanks to several precautions:
- wax-injected underbody and opening panel hollow sections,
- mastic sealing of exterior joints,
- additional wax treatment of underbody mechanical components,
- stone-chip protection for underbody, sills and wheel arches.
Similar care has been paid to the electrics and electronics, with an installation already seen on several Renault
models.
To back up its high build quality, Dacia Duster comes with a three-year or 100,000km warranty in the majority of
its European markets.
5
A TRULY INTERNATIONAL CALLING
Duster is a truly international vehicle, both in terms of its markets and its production. It will gradually become
available across the world, following the example of Logan and Sandero.
Dacia Duster to be released in the brand's main markets from the spring of 2010
Dacia Duster will be launched in the spring of 2010 in Europe, Turkey and the Maghreb region (Algeria, Morocco).
It will round off the Dacia model line-up, which is expanding in the majority of these markets. In addition to the
three vehicles aimed at the private sector (Logan, Logan MCV and Sandero), Dacia has staked its claim, too, in
the LCV sector with Logan van and Logan pick-up.
From June 2010, Duster will also be available in the Ukraine, the Middle East (Israel, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and
Lebanon) and in some African countries badged as a Renault.
The Pitesti factory, which is the principal production facility for Entry-range models, will supply all these markets
with both Dacia- and Renault- badged versions. The Romanian plant has an annual production capacity of
350,000 vehicles and will continue to produce the brand's other models.
Renault Duster in Russia, Brazil and the Gulf States in 2011
Duster will expand into other parts of the world in 2011. It will be distributed in the Gulf States, supplied from
Pitesti, and will also be built alongside Logan, Sandero and Sandero Stepway in Curitiba, Brazil, for distribution in
Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile. At a later date, Duster will go on to be manufactured at the Avtoframos plant
in Moscow, Russia.

Book your car and hit the roads

Many people love buying cars and hit the roads with enthusiasm. They opt for a brand new car and even survive this economic burden. They do not get affected after purchasing a first-hand car. But, the monetary-disturbance has suppressed many people’s eagerness to purchase a new car to drive on the roads as it might not prove to be an asset and may turn out to be a burden in the long run. The reason being that are the maintenance, service charges and other accidental costs (in any) that will substantially affect the economic concerns. Thus, there are many
car dealers who offer the vehicle for cheap.

They trade in used cars (very popularly known as second hand cars) so that they can profit the buyers as well as the sellers. This proves that, even in the hard economic situation, it is possible to do quite well and become a fighter.

Buying a used car online is now easier and cheaper than ever before.

Before you plan to book it, do consider the price range. Some car dealers tag a price to make sales, whereas others have a price label to make a customer. Now, it’s up to you to choose; you either want a reliable dealer or a money-maker.

Other than that, it is also essential to mark that the deal not only provides you with basic services but also offers some extra value for your benefit like after sales services, car insurance, 24 hour recovery service, full crash repairs, replacement vehicles supplied at special rates – to build a name.

In addition to used cars, these car dealers also offer brand new cars. So, if you think that you can survive this economic burden even after purchasing a first-hand car, then one more option is open for you.

So, select the best dealer for your car. Make the booking and your new car will be in your garage in just a few days. Now, you are all set to hit the roads.

20 years of TDI engines from Audi – trailblazing technology with a great future

In the fall of 1989, the Audi 100 TDI marked the beginning of a new diesel era
Innovations and technology trends in five million engines
TDI Chronicle – an overview of all engines and technologies

Ingolstadt, November 20, 2009 – Audi is celebrating another very special anniversary in 2009: the 20th birthday of TDI technology. In the fall of 1989, the Audi 100 2.5 TDI – the first Audi with a direct-injection turbocharged diesel engine – was exhibited at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. Ever since, the brand with the four rings has continued to increase its lead and set many milestones. Since 1989, Audi has produced over five million TDI engines and is now marketing a wide range of leading-edge power units. They combine great propulsive power, sporty driving enjoyment and exemplary efficiency, and demonstrate that this technology also holds great potential for the future.

Audi has been building diesel engines for over 30 years, the first of which was a five-cylinder unit with prechamber injection that made its debut in 1978. 11 years later, the brand made a technological breakthrough that revolutionized the diesel market. Under the abbreviation TDI, direct injection, turbocharging and totally electronic engine management were combined to create an entirely new dimension of powertrain technology.

Since then, the Audi brand’s engineering advances have propelled diesel engines to an undreamed-of technological boom and overwhelming market success. The TDI from Audi had put an end once and for all to the old diesel image as "lame, loud, and dirty" and turned it into the opposite. Today nearly every automaker includes this technology in its program.

"20 years of TDI means 20 years of progress and dynamic change, sporty power and efficiency," says Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG. "The TDI has been a key factor contributing to the advance of our brand into the premium segment. It has become the world’s most successful efficiency technology that is unsurpassed in the relation of power output to fuel efficiency."

The father of the Audi brand’s TDI technology is Richard Bauder, who continues to head the company’s diesel engine development to this day. The program was launched in 1976 with the 1973 oil crisis still fresh in mind, as Bauder reports. "What we set out to achieve was to develop an internal combustion engine with the lowest possible fuel consumption. We checked out all conceivable concepts all the way to a two-stroke diesel engine, and in the process analyzed and improved diverse injection and combustion methods. One of our big breakthroughs was the dual-spring injection-nozzle holder, which allowed the pre-injection of smaller fuel amounts. The result was smoother combustion and improved acoustics – the fundamental requirements for use in passenger cars."

The first TDI was a huge success right from the start. When installed in the third-generation Audi 100, the five-cylinder engine’s 2,461 cc displacement achieved 88 kW (120 hp) and 265 Nm (195.45 lb-ft) of torque, the latter at 2,250 rpm. A distributor-type injection pump sprayed the fuel into the combustion chambers.

A pioneering achievement: Top speed of nearly 200 km/h (124 mph), fuel consumption of 5.7 l/100 km (41.27 US mpg)

As the engine went into production in the Audi 100 Avant late in 1989, its muscular power marked the dawning of a new era. At that time, diesel engines were considered economical and durable but rather dull performers. However, with a top speed of nearly 200 km/h (124 mph), the Audi 100 2.5 TDI propelled its way into the ranks of fast touring sedans, also featuring enormous acceleration from zero and amazing fuel economy of 5.7 liters of diesel fuel/100 km (41.27 US mpg) – established in line with the valid standards at the time. What’s more, the car’s travel range between refills was very generous.

In the midsize class too, TDI engines from Audi began to triumph. Starting in 1991, the Audi 80 was powered by a four-cylinder, 1.9-liter diesel unit that delivered 66 kW (90 hp) and 182 Nm (134.24 lb-ft). Four years later, an upgraded version with 81 kW (110 hp) was added. The increase in power was mainly due to the use of a new turbocharger with adjustable guide blades on the exhaust side:

The so-called VTG charger with variable turbine geometry enabled torque to be boosted smoothly and promptly, even from very low engine speeds.

In 1993, the brand with the four rings converted its entire diesel program to TDI engines, and then in 1994 Audi took the next step: The five-cylinder unit was upgraded to 103 kW (140 hp). A six-speed transmission became the production model, and for the first time the TDI was combined with permanent all-wheel drive – in the first TDI quattro. With 290 Nm (213.89 lb-ft) of torque at 1,900 rpm, 208 km/h (129.25 mph) top speed and 9.9 seconds for the standard acceleration test from standstill, this car almost instantly became a sensation. The TV spot with the question "Where’s the tank?" made it legendary: The A6 TDI covered a distance of up to 1,300 kilometers (808 miles) on a single tank of fuel.

1997: The first V6 TDI in a passenger car

In 1997 Audi yet again initiated a revolution – with the debut of the world’s first V6 TDI in a passenger car. With its four-valve cylinder head, another innovation, this 2.5-liter power unit delivered up to 110 kW (150 hp) and 310 Nm (228.64 lb-ft) of torque. Two years later this was followed by the first V8 TDI from Audi. Installed in the A8, this too introduced a groundbreaking technology – common rail injection. The 3.3-liter unit delivered 165 kW (224 hp) and produced 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft) of torque. Its 242 km/h (150.37 mph) top speed and quiet operation further contributed to the pleasure of driving a TDI car.

Another important new solution was developed for the four-cylinder engine. In 2000, a new high-pressure injection system, whose integrated pump/nozzle elements generated 2,050 bar of pressure, boosted the output to 85 kW (115 hp) and later to 96 kW (130 hp).

In the compact class, Audi set another milestone in 2001: The A2 1.2 TDI achieved an average fuel consumption of 2.99 liters/100 km (78.67 US mpg). The compact A2 with its lightweight aluminum body featured a three-cylinder diesel engine with 1.2 liters displacement. A derivation from its big brother, the 1.4 TDI, it generated 45 kW (61 hp) and 140 Nm (103.26 lb-ft) of torque. The A2 3L TDI was the world’s first five-door car with fuel consumption of under three liters per 100 kilometers – and remains so to this day. In 2003, Audi also produced a more powerful cousin of its 1.9-liter TDI in the shape of the 2.0 TDI.

New generation: The 3.0 TDI

In large engines too, Audi vigorously advanced its technology. A 4.0-liter V8 with 202 kW (275 hp) was introduced in 2003 that anticipated some of the technical details of the new generation of V engines. The first full-fledged member of this family followed a year later in the shape of a new V6 TDI with 3.0 liters displacement. Its attributes – 90 degrees cylinder angle, 90 mm cylinder spacing, camshaft chain drive on the rear side – are standard features now in the new family of Audi V engines.

The three-liter engine with an output of 165 kW (224 hp) was equipped with common rail technology and innovative piezo injectors. These can inject very small doses of fuel, and by virtue of extremely fast opening and closing can deliver multiple separate pre-, main- and post-injections. When a voltage is applied to piezo crystals, they slightly expand in a fraction of a millisecond. In the injector, several hundred tiny piezo disks are stacked on top of each other, and the expansion of this stack is transferred directly to the injection needle.

Piezo injectors can thus produce precisely regulated increases in pressure and a uniform combustion process, which has brought engine acoustics into the region of gasoline engines. Another innovation was a particulate filter to clean the exhaust gas. In 2007/2008 the new four-cylinder 2.0 TDI too was equipped with a common rail system including piezo injectors. In 2009 this became the standard technology in all diesel engines.

Richard Bauder, who is in charge of diesel development at Audi, proudly takes stock of what has been achieved to date: "In 1989 we started out with 900 bar of injection pressure; today we’re at 2,000 bar. During this period, our TDI units have increased by more than 100 percent in power output and 70 percent in torque relative to a given displacement. At the same time, emissions have been reduced by 98 percent." In the past 20 years, the TDI has experienced impressive growth: During this period, Audi has produced more than five million of these engines. Taking all makes into account, the TDI principle today powers every second passenger car built in Europe.

The TDI units marketed by Audi today are amazingly well-rounded performers – clean and efficient, dependable, refined, comfortable, and powerful. In motorsport, the world’s toughest test lab, they are proving how closely efficiency and dynamics are related at Audi.

5/6

The R10 TDI racing car, whose V12 diesel engine delivers more than 480 kW (650 hp), has won the Le Mans 24 Hours three times in a row starting in 2006. Its successor, the R15 TDI with a V10 diesel engine, has been earning top rankings right from its debut in 2009.

In production cars too, TDI engines from Audi excel with their muscular power. The top version of the Audi Q7 is equipped with the world’s strongest production diesel engine. The V12 TDI generates 368 kW (500 hp) and 1,000 Nm (737.56 lb-ft) of torque with its 6.0-liter displacement, endowing the big SUV with the performance of a sports car.

The 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque is another sporty engine. It delivers lively power and refinement, and thus lends brilliance to the dynamic TT and the TT Roadster. The lightweight, mainly aluminum bodies of this model series contribute to its superior driving performance: The TT Coupé, with quattro permanent all-wheel drive as standard equipment, accelerates in 7.5 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) and attains a top speed of 226 km/h (140.43 mph). Yet on average it gets by on only 5.3 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km (44.38 US mpg).

Even better consumption: Technology from the modular efficiency platform

By their very nature, diesel engines utilize the energy contained in fuel especially well, and the technologies from the Audi brand’s modular efficiency platform further amplify this effect. Intelligently managed subsystems such as a demand-controlled oil pump consume less energy. Sophisticated production methods reduce friction within the engine. In many TDI units for instance, laser beams are used to perfectly smooth down the cylinder paths. This makes them last even longer, further reduces oil consumption and reduces stresses at the piston rings, which decreases friction as well as fuel consumption.

In addition to the engines, start-stop and recuperation systems also contribute to high efficiency. So do many other engineering features in these vehicles, from lightweight aluminum body design to LED lights, and from the highly efficient air conditioning system to economical route guidance in the navigation system.

Owing to this abundance of cutting-edge technology, Audi now has 33 models in its program with CO

2 emissions of less than 140 grams per kilometer (225.31 g/mile), nearly all of them with TDI engines. They achieve exemplary fuel economy. The 2.0 TDI in the A4 puts out 100 kW (136 hp) and gets by on 4.6 liters/100 km (51.13 US mpg) – a CO2 equivalent of 119 grams/km (191.51 g/mile).

6/6

The 1.6 TDI, which will join the A3 model series in 2010, delivers 77 kW (105 hp), but consumes only 3.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (61.9 US mpg), corresponding to a mere 99 grams of CO

2

per kilometer (159.33 g/mile).

During the very recent Audi Efficiency Challenge A to B, a tour of Europe covering more than 4,182 kilometers (2,599 miles), the two four-cylinder units have already proven their worth: The A3 1.6 TDI got by on 3.3 liters/100 km (71.28 US mpg), the A4 2.0 TDI on 4.4 l/100 km (53.46 US mpg). Such endurance tests are a tradition at Audi: Even the first Audi 100 TDI models traversed the continent, achieving sensationally low fuel consumption values as well as long distances traveled between refills.

The next step: Audi clean diesel

Even 20 years after the market launch of the TDI, Audi is continuing to expand its lead and is excellently positioned for the future. Its innovative clean diesel technology renders exhaust fumes still purer by largely converting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water. The 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine already meets the strictest exhaust emission limits in the United States as well as the Euro 6 limits announced for 2014. It is already propelling both the Q7 and the A4.

In the medium term, Audi is relying on second-generation biofuels such as sunfuel. These fuels use the residues of energy plants – not merely their fruits, as is the case in current versions of biodiesel. During combustion, they merely emit as much carbon dioxide as they have consumed from the atmosphere during their growth. Independently of this, Audi will continue to further reduce fuel consumption of its fleet of vehicles – with a target of 20 percent below its 2007 level by 2012. The potential inherent in the TDI is far from exhausted. In the past 20 years, Audi has written a tremendous success story with this engine concept – and will continue to do so during the next decade.

The New BMW 760i Twelve-Cylinder

The New BMW 760i Twelve-Cylinder

The New BMW Twelve-Cylinder Power Unit, Supreme Power without the Slightest Effort.

The twelve-cylinder power unit in a BMW 7 Series luxury performance saloon guarantees a driving and travel experience quite unique in every respect. No other engine offers such an outstanding combination of power and refinement, no other power unit provides the same supreme standard of prestige.
Now these features come out even more clearly, with BMW’s new V12 offering significantly more power and torque compared with their predecessors, optimising engine response and the ongoing surge of power, and further refining the engine’s acoustics. The progress achieved in this way is clearly recognisable right from the start.
These features also stand out clearly from the BMW 750i which, with its modern V8 featuring TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection, as such already offers the power and performance of a conventional twelve-cylinder.
Hence, the new V12 maintains the outstanding position of BMW’s twelve-cylinder models also in the new generation of the BMW 7 Series, giving the driver of a BMW 760i and, respectively, a BMW 760Li all the assurance of absolute supremacy in the luxury class. Yet a further point is that the new engines combine the outstanding qualities of a V12 with up-to-date efficiency, offering a level of fuel economy and emission management even better than eight-cylinder models in the same segment as the BMW 7 Series.
By tradition, the twelve-cylinder enjoys a special status worldwide unmatched by other engines of different design and configuration. The twelve-cylinder represents the highest level of competence in engine technology and justifies its outstanding position through qualities only this drive concept is able to offer.
The unique status of the twelve-cylinder as an incomparably powerful and, at the same time, refined power unit is based on a construction and design principle which offers perfect conditions for supreme power and performance achieved without the slightest effort. Benefiting from an angle of 60° between the two rows of cylinders, the V12, in its supreme elimination of vibrations, comes closer to the highest standard conceivable in physics than any other engine.
All components and design features on the all-aluminium engine block are built and constructed for supreme stiffness on minimum weight. Using a closed-deck structure combined with bolts holding the cylinder head down on the floor plate of the crankcase, the engine, to mention just one example, ensures maximum stability on the cylinder liners. Double bolts on the main bearings with an additional connection to the side panels through threaded support bushes and bolts reduce the influence of lateral forces from the crankdrive on the crankcase.
Further components of the engine block serving in typical BMW twelve-cylinder style to reduce vibrations to an absolute minimum are iron-coated aluminium pistons, forged connecting rods assembled through the cracking process, as well as the crankshaft also forged for absolute perfection. This also makes the sound of the engine when idling a very special experience where the driver first has to look at the rev counter to see whether the engine is running at all.
The new V12 power unit comes with 5,972 cc maintaining exactly the same cylinder volume as on the former engine. Displacing 497.7 cubic centimetres per cylinder, the engine therefore offers exactly the right size and dimensions acknowledged by engine specialists as absolutely ideal. Bore of 89 mm/3.50″ and stroke of 80 mm/3.15″ provides a ratio between these two parameters of 0.9, while the compression ratio is a remarkably high 10.0 : 1 quite unusual on a turbocharged power unit.
Introduction of TwinPower Turbo Technology on the twelve-cylinder.
BMW’s new twelve-cylinder comes with a number of special technical features serving to capitalise on the potential it offers through its design principle and basic structure. In particular, this includes the first-ever use on a twelve-cylinder of TwinPower Turbo Technology and ¬High Precision Injection with gasoline injected directly into the combustion chambers.
Featuring this combination of superior technologies already to be admired on BMW’s six- and eight-cylinders, responding sensitively and directly even to small movements of the gas pedal, maintaining a consistent torque curve and offering a level of fuel economy and emission management quite unusual for an engine of this calibre, the new twelve-cylinder again stands out from the competition in every respect.
Thanks to the small cylinder angle of just 60°, the two exhaust gas turbochargers developed specifically for the new V12 fit in compact arrangement on the outside of the two rows of cylinders, each supplying six cylinders with compressed air.
The turbochargers stand out in particular through their unusually good compressor and turbine efficiency – and through their particular position they provide ideal conditions for keeping the pipes between the exhaust manifold and the turbochargers short and straight for ideal flow conditions. Central supply of turbocharger air into the air collector, in turn, helps to optimise both the engine’s acoustics and charge cycle. The exhaust gas manifolds identical on each row of cylinders come in each case with two three-in-one connections geared to the engine’s firing sequence. In combination with the catalytic converters optimised for minimum counter-pressure, this special configuration of the exhaust gas manifolds sets the foundation for outstanding spontaneity in following the gas pedal as well as supreme power and torque coming from the twelve-cylinder.
Peak torque now increased to 750 Newton-metres or 553 lb-ft comes at just 1,500 rpm and is maintained consistently all the way to 5,000 rpm. Compared with the former engine, this means an increase in torque by 25 per cent now developed at an engine speed approximately 2,300 rpm lower.
Engine power is also built up more quickly than on the previous engine, as is borne out by the much steeper power curve leading up to maximum output of 400 kW/544 hp at just 5,250 rpm. On the road, this means performance borne out, for example, by acceleration from a srandstill to 100 km/h in both models in just 4.6 seconds.
Intelligent solution for even more power and supremacy.
The introduction of TwinPower Turbo Technology raises the twelve-cylinder to a level of output and torque a naturally-aspirated power unit would achieve only with much larger displacement. The increase in engine size and weight inevitable in such a case, together with negative effects on the centre of gravity, fuel consumption and the agility of the car, are all avoided most efficiently and intelligently through turbocharger technology.
A further point is that TwinPower Turbo Technology gives the new V12 its unparalleled power and performance characteristics borne out in particular by the superior development of full power and torque right from the start just above idling speed and then maintained over a wide load range.
To ensure sensitive and precise dosage of power at all times, the compressed turbocharger air is cooled by a technically very demanding and elaborate indirect intercooler. This serves to minimise the overall volume of air required and shorten any delay times, again enabling the engine to respond ideally to the driver’s foot on the gas pedal. An additional coolant pump feeds the separate coolant circuit required for this purpose with its air/coolant heat exchanger positioned directly on the intake unit.
The catalytic converters on the new twelve-cylinder come with the most advanced and sophisticated exhaust gas sensors and quickly reach their optimum operating temperature thanks to their special position close to the engine. Efficient treatment of exhaust gases ensures full maintenance of all international emission standards, the BMW 760i and the BMW 760Li fulfilling the EU 5 emission standard in Europe and the ULEV II standard in the USA.
To reduce counter-pressure the exhaust system comes on the underfloor with largely straight pipes and manifolds increased in size to the largest possible diameter. Exhaust flaps around the silencer masterminded by the electronic control unit as a function of engine maps provide exactly the right engine sound precisely geared to current driving conditions. When idling, therefore, the V12 remains absolutely silent, not emitting any noise at all. The same applies to cruising conditions, with only very discreet sound from the engine being emitted to the outside. So it is only at higher engine speeds that the driver receives appropriate acoustic feedback on the development of power, with the engine providing its muscular V12 sound when accelerating fast and under full power. Again, this special sound effect under such dynamic conditions authentically reflects both the capacity of the engine and the intensity of power coming from within the engine compartment, characterising the dynamic qualities of BMW’s twelve-cylinder.
Optimised combustion and maximum efficiency ensured by High Precision Injection.
BMW ¬High Precision Injection is a second-generation direct injection technology serving to optimise the combustion process and use the energy contained in the fuel with maximum efficiency. Piezo-injectors positioned in the middle of the cylinder head allow particularly precise dosage of the fuel injected into the combustion chambers.
In combination with TwinPower Turbo Technology, ¬High Precision Injection is featured in all gasoline engines in the BMW 7 Series. And now, in the new V12 power unit, this technology ensures particularly efficient and clean combustion as the starting point for a level of fuel economy and emission management quite unparalleled in this class of performance.
Opening up to the outside, the piezo-injectors are positioned in the cylinder head between the valves and, as a result, directly next to the spark plugs. They are supplied with fuel through stainless-steel pipes, fuel then being injected into the combustion chambers in finely atomised form at a pressure of up to 200 bar. This system pressure is generated by single-plunge fuel pumps on each row of cylinders and is maintained reliably at all times by short pipes and fuel travel.
The fuel injected in this process spreads out in conical form, thus burning in a particularly smooth and clean process. This, in turn, has a positive effect on engine emissions and sound, the cooling effect of the fuel/air mixture provided by direct fuel injection helping in addition to achieve a higher compression ratio than on a turbocharged engine with manifold injection. The bottom line, therefore, is an even higher degree of engine efficiency generating more power on less fuel.
In their configuration and structure, the cylinder heads largely follow the particular position of the injectors and spark plugs as well as the combustion process provided by ¬High Precision Injection. Short combustion phases optimised for maximum efficiency build up a high level of pressure and temperature requiring optimised cylinder head geometry and an effective flow of coolant. The cylinder head components cast in a gravity process stand out in particular through their very high level of stiffness, while the cylinder head covers are made of aluminium and come with rubber profile seals.
Double-VANOS and volume flow-controlled oil pump for
maximum efficiency.
Again in typical BMW style, the new twelve-cylinder comes with double-VANOS for infinite adjustment of camshaft control timing. This ensures part load running conditions with a high level of residual gas and reduced throttle loss for maximum fuel efficiency.
A further advantage of double-VANOS is its support in giving the engine a particularly direct response. Joined in a thermal process, the camshafts come with forged cams, additional triple cams on the intake side serving to drive the high-pressure fuel pumps. The valves on the exhaust side, in turn, are filled with sodium for optimum cooling and come with chrome-plated shafts.
The supply of oil to the new twelve-cylinder has also been optimised, the volume flow-controlled oil pump operating on individual demand with maximum efficiency: The six-chamber pendulum-slide pump delivers only as much oil as the engine requires at any given point in time under specific driving conditions.
An oil level sensor is integrated in the oil sump made of pressure-cast aluminium. And instead of a manual oil dipstick, an oil level indicator in the instrument cluster also operating while driving informs the driver of the oil level whenever required.
The new twelve-cylinder models in the BMW 7 Series again feature a wide range of technologies for minimum fuel consumption and emissions based on BMW’s strategy of ¬EfficientDynamics. These include Brake Energy Regeneration, electric coolant pumps operating on demand, and the volume flow-controlled oil pump further optimising the balance of load performance and fuel consumption.
With an increase in engine output versus the former models by 22 and an increase in maximum torque by 25 per cent, average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle has been reduced to 12.9 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 21.9 mpg imp) on the BMW 760i and 13.0 litres (21.7 mpg imp) on the BMW 760Li. The emission rating, in turn, is 299 grams and, respectively, 303 grams per kilometre.
The engine coolant system on the new twelve-cylinder excels through consistent integration of all pipes in the crankcase, optimised cross-sections and the surface structure ensuring a maximum heat exchanger function helping to warm up the engine far more quickly than before on the former power unit.
The arrangement of the coolant inlet immediately next to the main inlet duct for supplying oil serves in addition to connect the two media in thermal terms, again helping to warm up engine oil and maintain the ideal temperature at all times.
The flow of coolant is separated on the two rows of cylinders, in each case running diagonally from the rear outside to the front inside. And last but not least, the arrangement of the outlets again helps to consistently spread out and maintain the temperature level over a wide range of engine speed.

New and used automatic cars for the people

By Elaine Larkin
Transmission is something many people overlook when searching for a new or used cars.
Unlike the US or Australia, the majority of cars in Ireland are manual, or as the Americans might say ‘stick-shift’, and therefore many car buyers overlook the automatic, out of habit.
However, 10% of the new and used cars available to buy on Carlot.ie are automatic, so there is plenty of choice there for both fans of automatic cars and those who have yet to be converted.
The range of automatic cars on sale is wide and isn’t confined to what one would regard as a car suited to an inexperienced or learner driver. Top of the range Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW models make up the new automatic cars for sale through car dealers advertising on Carlot.ie.
It’s hard to say where Ireland’s dedication to and love of the manual transmission stems from. There are many opinions as to the pros and cons of a manual car versus an automatic car, which should be considered before buying a car. How real or perceived these actually are can really only be ironed out in an individual’s mind following a test drive.
The basic differences are simple. In a manual car there are three pedals, these are, from left to right: clutch, brake, accelerator. To change gears (first gear through fifth or sixth), the driver must press on the clutch, while taking their foot of the accelerator, put their hand on the gear stick and move it to the desired gear. That’s a lot to do at the one time for someone moving to Ireland from a foreign country where automatic cars are the norm.
A car with automatic transmission has just two pedals. From left to right they are simply the brake and accelerator. An automatic car doesn’t have a gear shift. The ‘gear stick’ is in the same place as a manual and has four or five options. The main four are P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral) and D (Drive). Drivers simply move this to the desired setting depending on what they’re doing.
One of the benefits of a manual transmission is that it gives better control of the car by moving through the gears according to the road, traffic and weather conditions. It’s no surprise with Ireland’s miles of winding country roads that the manual transmission is favoured here.
However, Ireland also has miles of excellent motorway and dual carriageways some of which turn into car parks at peak hour. One of the things that attracts people to buy an automatic is not having to change gear so much on long commutes. They are also beneficial to older or nervous drivers or drivers with a disability. Another advantage is that not having to clutch and change gear simultaneously means the driver can devote their concentration resources to steering and watching the road.
While an automatic may seem like the perfect car for a learner driver, it should be noted that in Ireland if you do your driving test in an automatic and pass, your full licence only covers you for driving an automatic and not a manual transmission car. If you’re thinking of buying a new or even a used car, test drive an automatic, it could be the driving experience you’ve been seeking.

Car Buyers cool of with air con

By Elaine Larkin
Remember the last time you bought a new car and brought it on a long drive on a hot day? You were sweltering, because you’d forgotten to see if it had air con.

A/C which is the shorthand for air conditioning in the world of car sales and hotel rooms the world over, was not a listed feature. And because it was just another cool and rainy Irish day, you never even thought of air con.
If you’re thinking of buying a car and like taking long drives on sunny days or have a considerable commute to work and aren’t fond of sweat patches, write A/C on your list of important features for your dream car.
Although air con is a feature mostly found in cars in hot countries (and Ireland doesn’t generally fit this description), the availability of air con as a feature is increasing in new and second-hand cars.
Buyers of new cars often see the value in spending on extra features such as air con to help the car’s resale value when they decide to sell it privately or trade it in through a car dealer.
More air con in new cars means more used cars are appearing on the market with these features. Anybody who has experienced car tailbacks on a bank holiday weekend or traffic jams on their commute to work will attest to the value of having air con, even if they get to use it only a few days in the year.
Air conditioning in a car does a lot more than a fan blowing out cold air. It stabilises air temperature and humidity and makes the air within the car bearable, especially on humid or sunny days.
There’s other advantages too, this year German scientists released findings from a study they carried out on the quality of the air in air conditioned cars. The quality of the air improved by 80% when the air con was turned on – cutting out 80% of germs, fungal spores and particles from the air flowing into the car, which is particularly good news for people with allergies or respiratory problems.
Air conditioning was first installed in cars some 70 years ago, in 1939, so if air con isn’t on your must have list, it is fair enough to say you’re behind the times: air con has been around since World War II and became increasingly popular in the 70s (in the States at least).
There are perceived disadvantages to air con – that it results in more fuel being consumed. There are varying attitudes to this – one is that yes it does, perhaps using up to 11% extra fuel – after all the fuel in your car has to power the air conditioning. The counter argument is that if you were to drive with the windows rolled down (a popular alternative to air con), the wind drag will cause increased fuel consumption anyway.
The choice is yours. But if you do decide to buy a new or second-hand car with air conditioning, remember, don’t have the windows rolled down and the air con on, it defeats the purpose.

Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen and most popular new cars in 2009

Part of the fun of buying a new car is to get noticed on the roads – having a 2009 number plate, or the latest model of your dream car.

Another way to get noticed, apart from the finish and colour and extra features, is what make of new car you actually decide to buy. Will you stick to your
local car dealer, buy the latest model of the car you’ve driven for the last 10 years, will you read car reviews avidly, or just decide to buy a popular make of car?

A definite way to make heads turn is to buy a new car that very few people are driving.

According to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office, 5 brands of car dominated new cars sales in Ireland in the first 6 months of 2009 – Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen, Nissan and Opel.

These 5 motoring giants accounted for 57% of all new private cars licensed in Ireland between January and the end of June 2009.

Two in 7 drivers of new cars in Ireland in 2009 are driving either a Toyota (15.4%) or a Ford (14.5%). 11% of newly-licensed cars over the first half of 2009 were Volkswagens, while 9.4% were Nissans. Just 6.7% of people buying a new car in 2009 bought an Opel.

The statistics, issued on a monthly basis, throw up some interesting facts.

The most popular new cars overall to drive in the first half of this year were:
1. Toyota 6. Renault
2. Ford 7. Audi
3. Volkswagen 8. Skoda
4. Nissan 9. Peugeot
5. Opel 10. Kia

While the top 5 cars to drive in Ireland have stayed the same every month, numbers 6 to 10 have varied.

The top 10 most popular car makes in June 2009 were:
1. Ford, 6. Audi
2. Volkswagen 7. Hyundai
3. Toyota 8. Skoda
4. Nissan 9. Peugeot
5. Opel 10. Mercedes Benz

The most popular new cars that people rushed out to buy or had pre-ordered at the beginning of the year were:

1. Ford 6. Renault
2. Toyota 7. Skoda
3. Nissan 8. Audi
4. Volkswagen 9. Peugeot
5. Opel 10. Honda

The Central Statistics Office’s new private car figures list approximately 40 models, with the about 1% categorised under ‘other makes’.

It’s quite clear from the statistics, which cover the first half of the year, there just a handful of certain car models were purchased new in 2009. There are a mere 2 2009-registered Smart cars on Irish roads, 9 Porches, 10 Jeeps, 14 Ssangyongs, 26 Vauxhalls, 31 Chryslers, 35 Dodges, 62 Daihatsu cars, 81 Saabs and 107 Land Rovers.

So, if you’re looking for a new car and don’t want to have difficulty finding yours in the car park, work down through the following list in order:
Smart, Porsche, Jeep, Ssangyong, Vauxhall, Chrysler, Dodge, Daihatsu,
Saab, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Lexus, Subaru, Mini, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Suzuki, Seat, Citroen, Fiat, Honda, Mercedes Benz, Mazda, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Peugeot, Skoda, Audi, Renault, Opel, Nissan, Volkswagen, Ford, Toyota.

See Carlot.ie for a list of car dealers where you can buy your new car, whatever you decide on.

Bad idea to sell used cars on roadside

Up and down Ireland car parks and roadsides are littered with used cars, vans and commercial vehicles with a for sale sign placed in the window.

Worryingly, private sellers are turning to this method of advertising the sale of second hand vehicles. This is despite the fact the practice of selling cars on the side of the road is frowned upon by local authorities, banned by some county councils and oft labelled illegal.

Sometimes all the crude sign in the vehicle window will have is ‘For Sale’, followed by a mobile number. Some will advertise a price with o.n.o. (or nearest offer) as well as details of whether the car is NCT’d.

Apart from coming under the scrutiny of local Gardaí or councils, one of the downfalls of the roadside car for sale is that it’s a danger to other motorists. A car driving by at 100km which brakes suddenly when the driver or passenger notices it’s for sale could be a danger to other motorists. Reversing back up the road or doing a swift U-turn to check the price, mobile phone number, NCT details, or the year of the car for sale could also be hazard.

While it may seem like a good idea to people trying to sell used cars– passing motorists can see the make and model of the car, and even manage to take down the mobile number without causing an accident, it is hardly an effective way of making a sale compared to advertising it through a website such as Carlot.ie.

Having to resort to selling a second hand car on the hard shoulder has an air of desperation about it, which can transfer doubts into the minds of potential buyers.

Is the individual selling the car is so unsure of the worth and value of the car that they can’t go pay a fraction of the car’s worth on advertising? There is the tried and tested means such as an ad in a local or national newspaper’s motoring section, or a website such as Carlot.ie

One of the advantages of Carlot.ie, is that it is a website which attracts people interested in buying new and used cars; potential buyers can search the site for specific makes, models, prices, locations, body style, car doors, transmission, fuel and so on.

Unlike strawberries or new potatoes for sale at the side of the road, when it comes to second hand cars for sale on the grass verge, there’s no vendor there to give a potential buyer the sales spiel.

There’s also the chance that the car could be vandalised, taken for a joyride, put up on blocks, towed, clamped or impounded.

Even if a car for sale on the side of the road looks new and in good condition, and seems like a bargain it still may not sell – the right buyer might be sitting at home or in work looking at newspaper ads or doing car searches online. They may never even take the road the car is parked on the side of, or they could be in the next county. One of the beauties of online car sales is that people from all over Ireland can search for what’s available countrywide. And if they have a specific make, model, features or price in mind, there’s nothing to stop them travelling 100 miles for the car they want
